Het Europees Parlement is woensdag akkoord gegaan met de toetreding van Roemenië en Bulgarije tot het Schengengebied voor vrij personenverkeer.

Een ruime meerderheid van het parlement stemde in met de toetreding van de staten, die daarmee overigens niet definitief is: uiteindelijk beslissen de lidstaten. Die bespreken de kwestie donderdag in Luxemburg.

Volgens D66-europarlementariër Sophie in 't Veld voldoen de twee landen aan de 'officiële criteria'. PVV'er Daniël van der Stoep laat weten teleurgesteld te zijn.

Te vroeg
Eerder op de dag zei minister Gerd Leers (CDA, Immigratie en Asiel) nog tegen de Tweede Kamer dat het 'te vroeg' is om de grenzen met Roemenië en Bulgarije op te heffen.

De landen voldoen wel aan de technische vereisten, maar volgens Leers moeten er eerst nog 'onomkeerbare en duurzame' stappen worden gezet tegen corruptie en criminaliteit.

Complimenten
Leers hamert erop dat er eerst meer vertrouwen moet worden gewonnen. Wel verdienen de landen complimenten voor hun verworvenheden op technisch gebied, zei de CDA’er.

In december lieten Frankrijk en Duitsland weten genoemde landen niet klaar te vinden voor vrij personenverkeer. Ook het Nederlandse Regeerakkoord gaat daar vanuit.

Kind of hard not to get close to the water when landing at an airport that is at the water&#8217;s edge and at such a low altitude. This looked like a good landing to me. I didn&#8217;t see any rooster tails from the landing gear. And if you noticed the jet still went a ways down the runway before coming in contact with the tarmac.

When I first started going to St. Thomas. Jets could not land there. They edtenxed the runway out into the water, now jets land there. Looking at it from a distance, you can see it jut out from the island.
